01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Pressed neatly onto golden, fragrant pancake rounds, the stamped image of a feline sumo wrestler is the calling card of Toshida. Set in the historic sumo district of Ryogoku, this specialty shop makes the playful "Sumo Neko" dorayaki, an eye-catching treat combining charm with serious confectionery craft. Beyond traditional coarse sweet red bean paste (tsubuan), variations include a filling with whole chestnuts and a bright lemon white bean paste. Balanced sweetness and aromatic pancake batter make them an easy choice for tea time or as a casual gift from a stroll through Ryogoku.

The neighborhood's wrestling heritage infuses other creations on the shelves as well. Ryogoku Rikishi Monaka takes the sculpted form of a wrestler stomping the ring, while traditional kawara senbei rice crackers come stamped with humorous sumo cat designs. During official grand sumo tournament periods, many visitors come specifically for the limited-run Oiri Daifuku mochi.

The small, calm shop welcomes guests with warm, attentive service at the counter. Stopping in during an afternoon wander to pick up a few carefully wrapped sweets is a quiet, reliable pleasure of visiting this pocket of Tokyo.
